Voice over IP

The University's traditional telephone communication services continue on the technological shift away from voice communications carried over a circuit (Verizon's Centrex) to having them carried over the Penn State Integrated Backbone (the Internet Protocol, or IP). As support for circuit-switched technology, such as is used by Merlin telephones, at University Park ends, telephone sets are being replaced with Voice-over-IP (VoIP) technology and IP phone sets. A Voice over IP is an emerging set of technologies that enables telephone communications to be carried over any network that uses IP (the Internet Protocol), such as Penn States Integrated Backbone. VoIP technology offers greater efficiency and opportunity for reducing costs for University departments and colleges.

Dial Tone

Initial VoIP dial tone rates at University Park are $9.50/mo. ($6/mo less than the standard dial tone rates for Centrex-based service). A separate, one-time, purchase of a VoIP phone is also required for the service. These new IP phone sets offer a full range of intelligent communication capabilities designed to take advantage of the power of the University's network. Plans are underway to enable the use of VoIP technology by other Penn State campuses in upcoming years.

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) Analog service

The VoIP Analog service can replace phone lines that are used by fax machines with an equivalent phone line provided by the VoIP system, while maintaining the existing telephone number.  VoIP Analog service may also be used to replace the legacy telephone service used by common analog telephones (also known as "tap sets"), cordless analog phones, and other devices that currently require an analog telephone line.  The VoIP Analog service works with the University's copper wiring facilities at a monthly dial tone service rate of $14.65 per line. There is no one-time charge to install or convert to this service if wires are available to the requested room location.

IP Telephone Sets

The IP phone sets offer a full range of intelligent communication capabilities designed to take advantage of the University's network while providing the convenience, reliability and ease-of-use expected from a traditional telephone set. IP Phones support familiar call handling features such as: three-way calling, call transfer, redial, hold, call forwarding and voicemail access. In the IP (Internet Protocol) environment, each phone has an Ethernet (LAN) connection much like your desktop computer . IP phone sets can also accommodate more complex features and capabilities.
