Access to the Internet via Cable Modem

Penn State Access Modem Lines

In our continuing efforts to provide faster, more reliable modem dial-up to Internet Access Services at Penn State, Telecommunications and Networking Services, in conjunction with the Information Technology Services, periodically upgrades the dial-up capabilities at campus locations. The upgrades allow for faster access speeds, as well as decrease the possibility of encountering a busy tone upon dial-up. Many campuses have received new digital dial-up capability in the form of units supporting dial-up over ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) lines. The new ISDN units support both ISDN dial-up at speeds up to 128Kbps and analog dial-up at speeds up to 56Kbps (using the v.90 protocol). However, analog dial-up access does require a minimum modem speed of 9,600bps and must support V.32. Slower modems will not work.

Note: The current set of campus analog modems have a maximum speed of 33.6Kbps. If you have a 56Kbps modem, it must support the V.90 protocol to down speed properly to the maximum V.34 (33.6kbps) speed of the campus analog modem. If your modem will not support v.90, then you must reconfigure your modem for V.34 only.

Note for 56KFlex modem users: The 56KFlex modem has a proprietary modulation protocol and therefore can only establish a connection with another modem that also supports that particular modulation protocol. At the present time, campuses that have analog modems do NOT support the modulation protocol of the 56KFlex modem. In order to dial up to these modems, 56KFlex users must download/install the V.90 patch from their modem supplier/vendor or reconfigure their existing modem to only work with the V.34 protocol.

The table below shows the current counts and speeds of access modem pools at Penn State Campus locations.

Information on this table is likely to change as the dial-up service upgrades at various campuses progress.
