TNS Services How does it work? |
Administering the Penn State Mobile Computing Service"Mobile Computing" provides wired access points to the Penn State Integrated Backbone for users with laptop computers who frequently travel between several Penn State sites and wish to have network access at each site. How does it work? The mobile service is implemented by creating an isolated Ethernet segment that provides dynamic IP address assignment and user authentication. The isolated segment is connected to an existing or new network via an authentication device which prohibits traffic from unauthenticated users from reaching the Internet. Who provides the service? Telecommunications and Networking Services can be contracted to manage all necessary components to provide this service with the provision that the existing network is already under TNS management. Organizations can administer this service themselves provided the relevant security and management policies are adhered to. Who can use the service? Only users who have an active Access Account are eligible to use this service. Although any authorized user can connect to the network from any mobile network segment, the organization which funded the network has the right to restrict access. What hardware and software will I need for my computer? In addition to a 10BaseT Ethernet port, your computer will need to have DHCP client software (typically, part of your IP stack) and the Netscape or Microsoft WWW Browser. What type of performance can be expected? TNS has conducted a series of throughput tests on the authorization device and has found it is capable of performing at a wire speed of 10 mbs. Who do I contact for more information? Organizations interested in installing the Mobile Computing service should contact their designated ITS Consultant . Administration of the Mobile Computing service is not offered directly to end users, therefore, prospective users must contact their network administrator or department head. |
