Domain Name System Servers
for PSU.EDU

Telecommunications and Networking Services (TNS) is the local authority for the Penn State Domain Name System (DNS). The Domain Naming System is a mechanism used in the Internet for translating names of computers into addresses and vice versa. For instance, DNS would change a computer name such as "clock.psu.edu" into the machine's actual numeric Internet Protocol (IP) address, which is in the form of numbers (for example, 128.118.25.3). If you have an account on an Internet computer, you probably use DNS all the time. Every time you send electronic mail or use the web or "telnet" to reach another computer, you rely on the Domain Name System.

128.118.25.3, 128.118.70.5, 130.203.1.4, and 146.186.163.66 and 128.118.141.32 are the five local authoritative DNS servers for Penn State. TNS provides 128.118.25.3, otc2.psu.edu and 128.118.70.5, sodium.tns.its.psu.edu. The Computer Science and Engineering Department provides 130.203.1.4, isengard.cse.psu.edu. The College of Earth and Mineral Sciences provides 146.186.163.66, ns1.ems.psu.edu. ASET provides 128.118.141.32.

When you are using a Penn State network as your internet service provider, configure your software to use 128.118.25.3, 128.118.70.5, 130.203.1.4, 146.186.163.66, and 128.118.141.32 as DNS servers - at least two, any combination will do. When connecting while off campus follow the recommendations of your internet service provider and do not use the psu.edu DNS servers listed above.

otc2.psu.edu may become unavailable for various reasons. Identifying 128.118.25.3, 128.118.70.5, 130.203.1.4, 146.186.163.66 and 128.118.141.32 as DNS servers will help you avoid the problem of otc2.psu.edu being unavailable. TNS notifies network administrators via electronic mail of planned and unplanned outages. Network administrators should in turn make sure their local software configurations identify 128.118.25.3, 128.118.70.5, 130.203.1.4, 146.186.163.66 and 128.118.141.32 as DNS servers.

TNS strives to make otc2.psu.edu available and robust. We continue to improve the software and hardware, the environment and procedures to provide a production level service.
