TNS Lead Times

The following are general lead times for telecommunications and networking service requests. The lead times are initiated at the time a properly completed and signed Telecommunications Service Request (TSR and supporting documentation (e.g., Design Request Form) are received and when the customer receives an e-mail confirming agreement on the scope of the work and the receipt of a signed TSR. Depending on the nature and complexity of the service request, much of the preliminary design discussions may occur before the confirming email is sent and work is initiated.

Requests that will result in major renovations or require infrastructure or facility upgrades may necessitate longer lead times and will be addressed according to the requirements of the individual project (ex. outside wire/fiber installation). All lead times specified are estimated within normal business days and does not include weekends or holidays.

Cable TV Service Lead Times
The following lead time assumes available facilities (e.g., wire/fiber). If additional facilities are required these lead times may increase. Lead times begin when the confirming TSR email is sent to the customer/requestor.
System/Service Parts Available in Inventory Parts Not Available in Inventory
Cable TV Design & Installation 2 - 6 Weeks 8 - 12 Weeks

  • Outlet - A telecommunications physical location consisting of a single or multiple jacks located on a single faceplate.
Lead times assume the following:
  1. Lead times BEGIN when all outlet locations have been identified and shown graphically on a plan.
  2. Adequate space exists within the serving Telecommunications Room for all required active and passive components and equipment.

Between Buildings (Inter Building wire/fiber)
Definitions
  • Segment - a single pole-to-pole span or a manhole-to-manhole duct bank section
Lead times assume the following:
  • No Right-of-Way agreements are required.
  • No pole attachment agreements are required.
  • Project involves only University owned property
  • Adequate pathways (either duct bank or aerial) exist. Lead times do not include design for construction of new pathways.
  • Does not include copper telephone wiring. Lead times vary according to how far into the distribution system the design must address to find available pairs.

Domain Name System Service Lead Times

TNS is the local authority for the Penn State Domain Name System (DNS). DNS is a client/server mechanism by which machine names get "mapped" to IP addressee. In order to facilitate the process of Integrated Backbone service requests, it is TNS's policy that all such requests be submitted by an authorized Administrative, Technical, or Security Contact specified on the Penn State Integrated Backbone Contact List (authentication required) via the applicable Integrated Backbone Service Request Forms below. These forms reside on a secured server and can only be accessed by an authorized Administrative, Technical, or Security Backbone contact.

Lead times are based on the time a request is made via the Integrated Backbone Service Request Form and a service completion e-mail is sent by TNS.
