TNS Policies Room Security Overview |
Obtaining Telecommunications Room Door Access via Card Security System or Key at University ParkThe purpose of this policy is to define how access to a Telecommunications Room is obtained. For additional information pertaining to appropriate Telecommunication room use, see the Policy on Rooms Used for Telecommunications. Telecommunications Room Security - OverviewBased upon findings of the University's auditors, reasonable physical security must be provided for Telecommunications Rooms in an effort to protect network integrity. To this end, Telecommunications and Networking Services (TNS) has converted the door locks of University Park Telecommunications Rooms (a.k.a. Closets) to an electronic card access lock system. The system utilizes the Penn State ID+ card to authorize users access to Telecommunications Rooms. Requesting Access to Telecommunications Rooms via the Card Security SystemPenn State Integrated Backbone Administrative Contacts (from this point on will be referred to as Administrative Contacts) are the only individuals that are authorized to request access for their applicable staff members to Telecommunications Rooms. Access will only be granted in the buildings where the requesting department or organizational unit has assigned subnets. In some instances, organizations do not own a backbone connection in a particular building. They may have obtained subnet address space or share a backbone connection through another department in the building; or may have extended a private network to that building. These organizations would not have an Administrative Contact in that building. In these instances, to maintain an auditing trail, requests for Telecommunications Room access will need to be routed through an Administrative Contact in that building. Administrative Contacts are required to make requests for access via the Telecommunications Closet Card/Key Access Application. Discontinuation of Telecommunications Room AccessIt is the responsibility of the Departmental Administrative Contact to notify TNS via the Telecommunications Closet Card/Key Access Application to request that access be removed for staff who no longer need it. Auditing Telecommunications Room AccessPer the University auditors, an audit of Telecommunications Room access will be initiated on a semo-annual basis for review and update. It is the responsibility of the Administrative Contacts to access the Telecommunications Closet Card/Key Access Application and audit their users when requested.
