LAN Services
Local Area Network (LAN)

For Penn State colleges, departments, or units that do not wish to design, install, maintain, and modify their own Local Area Networks (LANs), TNS provides a complete LAN design and maintenance service.

TNS will create LAN designs only for customers interested in TNS LAN installation and maintenance, TNS will

  1. modify only those LANs it maintains,
  2. maintain only those LANs it installs, and
  3. install only those LANs it designs.

All modifications must be performed by TNS in order for the LAN to continue to qualify for TNS maintenance. Refer to LAN Design Overview and LAN Overview for more information.

Wireless Lead Time
The Wireless LAN Service lead times apply to ITS Complete Wireless designs and installations. The Wireless LAN Service lead times represent two distinct phases of a wireless deployment (1) a wireless RF Design and (2) the actual wireless LAN design and installation.
The wireless RF design lead time assumes the following:
  1. No existing RF interference in the design frequency range.
  2. Adequate space exists within the serving Telecommunications Room for all required active and passive components and equipment.
  3. Full access to the spaces for survey work.
  4. The desired coverage area has been adequately identified and shown on a plan. Lead times do not include projects that require coordination with OPP non-PSU architects, and/or engineers, or other 3rd party contractors.
Wireless RF Design 8 Weeks
The lead times may vary depending if a contractor is or is not required, availability of parts, and if the appropriate facilities (e.g., wire/fiber) are available. If additional facilities are required these lead times may increase. Lead times begin when the confirming TSR email is sent to the customer/requestor.
