DISCONTINUATION OF WIRELESS MATCHING AND BACKBONE WAIVER PROGRAM – JUNE 30, 2008

Since fiscal year 2002/2003, Information Technology Services (ITS) has overseen a program to match funds on a 50/50 basis with units wishing to expand wireless coverage area of their local area networks. In cases requiring a new connection to the Integrated Backbone, the associated $1,000 connection fee was also waived. The success of this program has been instrumental in substantially increasing the extent of wireless coverage areas throughout the University, with many campuses now citing full coverage of high-speed wireless service. Roughly $350,000 has been expended thus far; with additional funds earmarked for support of Penn State Wireless deployments that are currently in the design and/or installation phase. The degree of success attained through prior extensions to the initial program period, coupled with the need to reallocate funds to other financial needs, requires that this program be discontinued at the end of the current fiscal year. Any University units wishing to take advantage of the program during the remaining months, must take action to do so. Specifically, those requesting financial assistance in funding a "Complete" installation must submit a fully approved TSR by June 30, 2008. Similarly, those with a request for an “Assist” installation must submit adequate information to enable approval by the TNS Senior Director, by June 30, 2008. University units wishing to inquire about the 50/50 program, or Penn State Wireless services in general, should contact ITS Telecommunications and Networking Services through the Web service inquiry form or call 814-865-6580 for more information.
